Bawan

Technique: Acrylic Color on woven kilim Size: 30 x 30 cm Year: 2020 My grandma's house in Kurdistan meant the start of an adventure, new playmates, and immersion in my favorite culture. My grandma in spite of being illiterate, is a treasure trove of Kurdish folklore stories. As the majority of Iranian women, she spends most of her time on households and cooking. Whereas weaving carpet is her main hobby. I've been in love with summer evenings lying beside my grandma in balcony as she wove kilim, telling stories about her life and bygone cultures. 'Bawan' means "Father’s home" in Kurdish language. The Bawan project was all about showing respect for my father's homeland and the amazing stories my grandmother used to tell. For my bachelor's degree final project back in university, I used acrylic color on woven kilim. Back at that time, my main challenge was applying color to an uneven and ragged surface meanwhile maintaining high quality and details of the illustrations. Another significant challenge was weaving the kilim using only one type of cotton loom warp thread.
